ToggleWhat is Green Shirt Day?
Green Shirt Day is observed annually on April 7 in Canada in honor of Logan Boulet, who raised awareness of organ donation and encouraged people to register as donors nationwide.
On April 6, 2018, the Humboldt Broncos (Canadian ice hockey team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan) bus crashed. Out of the 29 passengers, 13 had their lives permanently altered, and 16 lost their lives. A 21-year-old defenseman named Logan Boulet was among the players who lost their lives. A year prior, he had discussed his wishes with his parents and had only recently registered as an organ donor a few weeks prior. His parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet volunteered to give his organs to save the lives of six people. Logan donated his both kidneys, corneas, liver, lungs, and heart. Six people benefited from his contribution.
He was inspired by his coach Ric Suggitt, who had died on June 27, 2017, was an organ donor and helped 6 other people.
What is the Logan Boulet Effect?
100,000 Canadians enrolled as potential organ donors within a few weeks of this incident. This was the first instance that led a lot of individuals to sign up as organ and tissue donors, the birth of the Logan Boulet Effect.
Why is it Green?
Green Shirt Day shows that even in the worst of circumstances, there is always a ray of hope. The color green represents awareness of organ donation. Also, the Broncos team’s colors are Green and Gold.
